Deterioration of urban environments has caused widespread concerns among urban residents on its negative impacts on health. The public express strong desires to have their living environments improved. Urban forests are a forest type which has the closest relationship with human beings. They play important roles in regulating the urban environment. In this study, the positive impacts of urban forests ecosystem services on people's health were reviewed comprehensively. The ecosystem services were roughly divided into three categories: (1) health functions related to the improvement of urban environments; (2) health functions related to adjusting the physical and psychological conditions of humans; and (3) health functions related to promoting a healthy social relationship. The analysis results showed that the factors that affect the play of these health functions mainly include the compositions and structures of urban forests, the physical and psychological conditions of residents, and their socio-economic contexts. Currently researches on health functions of urban forest were largely restricted by lacking of a unified theoretic basis and effective methods to verify. In the future, quantitative studies on health functions of urban forests and their influencing factors should be enhanced, with particular focus on identifying a direct causative relationship between urban forest ecosystem services and the human health.
